About Ian Bruce
I am an artist based in Osoyoos, British Columbia, where the dry hills, open skies, working machinery, wildlife, and small communities of the South Okanagan all find their way into my work.
My path to art has not been a straight line, and I like it that way. Before I was showing watercolours or carving block prints, I spent years working with my hands as a mechanic, millwright, and engineer. That background still shapes how I look at things. I notice structure, movement, wear, repair, and the quiet character of objects that have done real work.
Today I work mainly in watercolour and printmaking, with occasional mixed media and photography. Some pieces begin on a trail, watching the seasons change. Others begin with a machine I once knew well, a bird heard overhead in the evening, or a familiar landmark passed many times before it finally asks to be painted.
My artwork is inspired by the landscapes, machinery, wildlife, and communities that have shaped my life in British Columbia. I am drawn to subjects that carry a story: places people recognize, tools and machines with history, and small moments in nature that are easy to miss unless you slow down.
Booming Ridge Studio is the creative home for this work. The name comes from the booming sound made by nighthawks during their dramatic diving displays, a sound my wife and I first heard on the ridge where our home was built. It felt like the right name for a studio rooted in place, memory, wildlife, and the stories that gather around a life outdoors.
I hope the work invites people to pause for a moment, look a little closer, and feel some connection to the places and stories behind each piece.
